Scotland Deaf v Wales Deaf
Saturday 27th November at GHA RFC, Braidholm, Glasgow

Scotland and Wales played the fourth deaf international between the two sides at Braidholm, home of GHA RFC in Glasgow. This was the second international between the two countries after Scotland reorganised themselves last year and it demonstrated the significant progress already made

Under dull and damp Glaswegian conditions, early pressure from the Welsh pack saw Tyrone Hughes drive over with Mark Withey converting. These early stages of the match featured good control by the Welsh forwards which led to a second try scored by James Evans. For a sustained period thereafter, Scotland played resolutely and were unlucky not to emerge with a score after a long passage of play in the Welsh twenty-two

This pressure was lifted by a good thrust from Nigel Francis who scored with a strong burst from close in. With Withey adding the points, Wales believed that half time could be reached with the security of a comfortable lead but this was not taking account of Scottish passion! Right on the stroke of halftime, a good passing move saw Grant Rutherford score to reduce the Welsh lead to 17-5

The second half produced positive rugby from both sides but it was not free of error as conditions became wetter and colder and handling more difficult. Gerwyn Cape scored down the right and then a sparkling run by Francis straight through the middle took the match away from Scotland. Withey converted having added a penalty between the two scores

Joe Jones scored a final try for Wales before Scotland again finished the half with a flourish, Mike Tweedie scoring a breakaway try which was duly converted to see a final score of 37-12

A good performance by Wales in difficult conditions and significant step forward by Scotland. As ever, post-match hospitality was of the highest order including a "Walkabout" in fair Glasgow city!

Final score: Scotland Deaf 12 - Wales Deaf 37.
