VINTAGE PERFORMANCE DISTILLED BY CLASSY WALES DEAF SIDE

Four tries by Pontypridd wing Gareth John saw the Wales Deaf rugby team overcome a spirited England Deaf side by 65 points to nil at Dunvant RFC on Saturday 4 November 2006.

Having previously defeated England 21-15 away earlier in March, the second international of the year between the two sides saw a feast of running rugby with 10 of the home team?s 11 tries being scored by their classy backline.

Former Tonna RFC flyer John equalled the record for the most tries scored in a deaf international match by taking advantage of slick passing and subtle inter-play between the backs and forwards.

Stout defence from the big England pack eventually gave way mid way through the first half as the Welsh side entertained the large crowd with a positive display of free flowing and enterprising rugby.

Team manager, Geraint John, said: ?We are absolutely delighted with not only the victory, but also the manner and the style in which the team applied itself today. Some of the support play was magnificent and it was great to see backs and forwards taking full advantage of the wide pitch to run in some well executed tries.?

Further tries were scored by James Evans (Birchgrove RFC), Ioan Jones (Trimsaran RFC), Richard Hardy (Pontyberem RFC), Mark Withey and Ben Pritchard (Caerphilly RFC), Chris Haddock (St Julian?s RFC) and Richard Lewis (Dunvant RFC). Mark Withey and Richard Lewis kicked five conversions.
